Profile

PhD, University of Rochester, 2012
Dr. Yan's research interest is generally in the area of high energy density physics (HEDP). In particular, he is interested in exciting plasma physics topics relevant to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and astrophysics. He uses large-scale Paricle-in-Cell (PIC) and has been developing fluid models to help understanding different levels of physical details in these highly nonlinear areas of physics.

Research Sujects

Laser plasma interactions

We are working on laser plasma interactions, especially the instabilities occuring when intense lasers are propagating in a plasma in ICF-relevant regimes. Lasers resonantly interact with intrinsic waves in a plasma.

  • Envelope of scatted lights (left) and electron plasma waves (right), showing convective amplification of the Stimulated Raman side Scattering
Magnetic field in ARTI Magnetic field in CRTI

Multiple physics in hydrodynamics

Hydrodynamics in HEDP include rich physics processes, e.g., magnetic fields, radiation, and kinetic effects.

  • Self-generated magnetic field in the Rayleigh-Taylor instabilties, ablative (left) and classical (right)
Magnetic field in ARTI Magnetic field in CRTI
